My story

MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE ART.

Hello, I'm Stephanie McCall, a local artist based in vibrant Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. My journey as an artist began during the pandemic, and that's why I proudly refer to myself as a "pandemic artist."

Before diving into the world of art, I spent my time as a substitute teacher at Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, NC. Always being creative, from doll making to handmade footstools. It was NWSA that ignited my passion for painting, and I was continually inspired by the incredible artwork my students produced. When the schools closed their doors due to the pandemic, I decided to embark on my artistic adventure. Armed with canvases, paintbrushes, and a variety of mediums, I turned my quarantine into a canvas, and I haven't looked back since.

After two years of honing my craft in the seclusion of quarantine, I came to realize that I possessed a unique gift for creating truly exceptional artwork. My preferred tools of the trade include acrylic paints, cardboard, oil pastels, chalk pastels, and a love for mixing unconventional materials like yarn, fabrics, glass, and wood to craft distinctive pieces. The larger the canvas, the greater my joy.

My artwork has undergone an exciting evolution, from two-dimensional works to three-dimensional creations using cardboard as my primary medium. It has since developed into a collage style, incorporating cardboard, paint, paper, fabric, and more. I'm influenced by multiple artists, drawing inspiration from their insights and incorporating them into my work.

My art has found a place in local art events, exhibitions, and galleries, connecting me with the vibrant Harrisburg art community. My dedication to self-improvement and artistic exploration has earned me awards and recognitions, establishing my credibility as an artist.

As for my creative process, it's driven by the experiences and struggles of the strong women who have surrounded me. My art often unintentionally portrays the resilience, beauty, and determination of women.

Looking ahead, my aspirations include seeing my artwork displayed at prestigious events like Art Basel and in various museums throughout the world. It's a thrilling journey of artistic exploration and growth, and I invite you to join me in this endeavor.

ARTIST STATEMENT.

“My art is a reflection of my unique journey, influenced by the strength and determination of the strong women in my life. It's a testament to the creativity that blossomed in the midst of adversity. I draw inspiration from the images in my mind and the world around me, infusing my pieces with the diversity and resilience I've encountered throughout my life.

My preferred medium is cardboard, which allows my creations to take on a remarkable three-dimensional form, emphasizing the collage work and the depth of the pieces. Additionally, I've developed a passion for painting on glass, a challenging medium that requires me to think backward to make the artwork come alive on the front of the glass.

Art, to me, is a powerful means of communication and expression. It serves as a vehicle to convey the stories and emotions that words sometimes cannot. I believe that art has the potential to unite people, bridge gaps, and bring to light the experiences and stories that may go unheard.

Through my work, I aim to capture the beauty in life's imperfections, celebrating the unconventional and the extraordinary. I believe that art has the power to heal, inspire, and unite, and my goal is to create pieces that resonate with others on a deeply personal level.

As an African-American woman, my hope is to develop a body of work that highlights strong African-American women, ensuring they are seen, heard, and understood. I'm driven by the constant desire to learn and grow as a self-taught artist, pushing the boundaries of my creative expression. My art is not only about bringing joy to those who experience it but also about supporting my dream of becoming a full-time artist who can continue to share their passion with the world. Thank you for being a part of my artistic journey.”
